Gently pull the pivot rod out of the drain pipe, noting the position of any washers or gaskets that come loose with it. To withdraw the rod fully, you may have to squeeze the spring clip at the same time. When the rod is out of the drain, you should be able to lift a stopper that was previously anchored.
To cure leaking, obtain new washers or gaskets and a new ball to replace the one on the end of the pivot rod. Take the old parts with you when shopping for new ones so to be sure of obtaining duplicates.

Tightening the retaining nut should also cure any leaking from around the pivot rod. If it does not, or if you must disassemble the drain to free the stopper, loosen the nut and slide it along the pivot rod out of the way.
Before reassembling the drain, clean the inside of the drain pipe with a rag. Then insert the new washers or gaskets. If the stopper is the type that can only be removed by withdrawing the pivot rod, place the stopper in the drain opening, aligned so that the hole in the base of the stopper can receive the end of the rod when it is inserted.
